Inthu’s Experience as HAF Volunteer
20th November 2023

Tell us a little about yourself…
I live in Barnet and I am a doctor.
What inspired you to volunteer?
I have volunteered for various humanitarian and community organisations in London in the past and have found it a rewarding and educational experience always – allowing me to serve my community and learn lots of new and valuable skills in the process. Helping marginalised and vulnerable members of our community has especially been rewarding. Volunteering can be a powerful tool to empower individuals and communities to create positive change – particularly during challenging times with the cost-of-living crisis and the impact of covid etc.
How did you find out about the volunteering role?
Through the community Barnet Plus website.
Tell us about your volunteering role…
It was a fun and educational experience volunteering for the Holiday Activity Programme. The variety of activities – including sports, arts and crafts and coding for young children – was impressive and catered for different interests and abilities of the children.
I was able to play alongside and help children learn as well as equally learn from them.
It was lovely to be able to bond with some children who were not keen on joining groups and therefore make them feel less isolated. I left feeling happy and glad to have made a positive impact alongside the volunteer team to provide a much- needed service for parents and children during the summer holiday.
The organiser and team were very welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend this volunteer experience and hope to continue volunteering in this role during the winter.
What has been the best thing about your volunteering experience?
The best thing has been seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of the children.
Can you sum up your experience in three words?
Fun, educational and rewarding!
