Alaa’s Experience as Advisor at New Citizens Gateway
10th March 2025

I have a background in scriptwriting and worked as a scriptwriter and a community researcher. My hobbies and interests include writing, film and sound design and cultural engagement.
What motivated you to become a volunteer?
I had to flee my country because of war: many volunteers helped me and gave support, who were an inspiration for me to volunteer and help other refugees and asylum seekers.
How did you find out about the volunteering role?
A manager at New Citizens Gateway offered me a volunteering role as an Arabic interpreter, but after some time, I did training and became an advisor.

Tell us about your volunteering role
As an advisor at the asylum accommodation hotels, I provided guidance and support to newly arrived asylum seekers. My role was to help them navigate their new environment and access necessary resources.
My daily tasks included meeting with asylum seekers, offering advice on various issues such as housing, legal support, and healthcare, and helping them understand their rights and responsibilities. I also organised activities and informational sessions to help them integrate into the community.
The most rewarding aspect of this role was seeing the positive impact of my support on the lives of asylum seekers. Providing them with the information and assistance they needed to start their new lives with confidence was deeply fulfilling.
Training Received: OISC Level 1 (Asylum & Protection).
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a volunteer?
Find your passion, and identify causes or issues that you are passionate about. Volunteering in an area that resonates with you; will make the experience more fulfilling and enjoyable.
Volunteering is not just about giving; it’s also about personal growth and connection. Enjoy the journey, and cherish the relationships and experiences you gain along the way.
Can you sum up your experience in three words?*
Transformative, Empowering, Fulfilling.
