Ceci’s Experience as Colindale Library Volunteer

My name is Ceci. I come from Hong Kong.
I have been living in Barnet since 2022.

What inspired you to volunteer?

At the beginning, I did not have friends here. Also, the language, environment, and culture are different.
Barnet Library is my first place to explore after arriving in my new home. I started joining the library activities and met new friends. The staff in the library are good and helpful.

I decided to join a volunteer there because I hoped to adapt and embrace my new life. Also, I want to explore the community and meet more people. And it is meaningful.

How did you find out about the volunteering role?

I applied as a volunteer at volunteeringbarnet.org.uk. There are a lot of different volunteer opportunities. At first, I submitted for a Volunteer Artist, and at the same time, I saw the library volunteer opportunity. So, I tried to apply for that.

Tell us about your volunteering role

I shelve the books and put them in the right place. In this process, I can learn more about the library collection.
At the same time, I need to respond to the customers’ inquiries, for example how to use the photocopier and self-serving machine; or how to log in to the computers.

If they want to register as a member of the library, I will give them the registration form & brief them on the sign-up process. Also, I assist and support the library activity such as preparation of materials & decorations, and registrations.

What has been the best thing about your volunteering experience?

It helped me to learn more about the community and built up my confidence. Also, as English is my second language, through helping people I can interact with more people with different backgrounds and accents, and improve my communication.

I enjoy helping people and contributing to the community. Also, I can earn local working experience… And I got the part time job finally.
