Ciaran Carroll’s Experience as The Loop Volunteer Associate

6th January 2025

Graphic saying "Case Study: Ciaran's Story"

Ciaran volunteers for The Loop at Grahame Park: a charity project that refurbishes unwanted furniture and resells it at an affordable price in the local community.

Please, tell us about your role(s) – What does it involve? How often do you volunteer?

Everyday currently. Help out running the store, supporting the delivery team with collections and drop offs, and helping out in the workshop with furniture repairs. There’s always stuff to do so you just keep busy.

What motivated you to become a volunteer?

Originally it was Doug. I was working at the old library, and he came over to ask for some help. I started doing 2-3 days a week and it just grew from there. At the time, I just wanted to help the team out with some IT things as I have some experience in that work, but it changed pretty quickly, and I started helping out all over.

What has been the best thing about your volunteering experience?

It’s relaxing. Everyone’s very friendly. I really enjoy the environment the team creates here. It’s always very positive because we’re trying to help the local residents. I’ve learnt a lot from the team, especially from Ozzie about deliveries and how to communicate with customers.

Carol and Doug have also taught me bits and pieces about furniture and upholstery that I never thought I’d learn about. I’m between jobs so it helps me keep busy and feel motivated each day.

Can you tell us about a memorable experience you have had as a volunteer?

It’s more about consistently doing small things to support the community each day. Helping older residents with pretty small tasks but they’re things that they may have been struggling with for a long time. You can tell it makes a big difference to them.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a volunteer?

Go for it. It’s a really great way to show that you’re keen to be doing something. I think it’s a great thing for me to be able to show future employers.

Being able to come in and do the work because you care, not because you’re paid to be there. It’s better that sitting around and waiting for a job.

Can you sum up your experience in three words?

Positive work environment!
